INTERVIEW

waxpoetics
For Groovalizacion.com is such an honor to have had the opportunity to speak with Andre Torres, founder and editor-in-chief of Wax Poetics. Since 2001 WAX POETICS magazine has been a powerful voice in music journalism. With its powerful visual style and extraordinary content, the bimonthly issues are a gem for music lovers around the world.  The wonderfull tasteful and insightful articles showcase hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz, reggae, Afro-funk, and Latin music. Recently they’ve done us all a favor by opening a digital music store to put the pages in our ears, oh yeah!

Andre, Wax Poetics is on its 34th issue since 2001 and growing very solid. Which one is your favorite issue and why?
Probably, number 18th is my favorite with Parliament-Funkadelic on the cover. P-Funk was my favorite band of all time and they are in the middle of what we do at Wax Poetics.

So now Wax Poetics has a terrific digital store (http://digital.waxpoetics.com) The site is very well synchronized with the articles in the magazine. What’s the idea behind the digital store?
A lot of the records and vinyl at Wax Poetics are not available on CD. Also, we are in a time where digital music is replacing CD’s and, actually, vinyl is rising back really fast these days. Young readers of Wax Poetics might not collect vinyl but they dig the music and buy the mp3’s. Also, there are new labels coming out with great new music available on digital. We are trying to be a boutique record store but digital and similar to the magazine, where we have fine stuff.

This last month, Lyman Woodard Organization’s Saturday Night Special LP came out as the fifth release from Wax Poetics records. Congratulations. I can tell you that I have been listening to it a lot lately. Can you tell me a little bit more about it?
This record happened to be a perfect timing for us. Everything happened very naturally. It is a great jazz record from Detroit and we are glad we did it.

I heard that Wax Poetics magazine is preparing a special about Brazilian music. How did you decide to go with Brazilian and when will it be out?
It will be out this summer with Jorge Ben on the cover. We started to think about a special issue of Brazilian music, we talked to people here and there, and that’s how things happen for us. It’s a very organic and natural process.

Are you working on anything besides the magazine and digital store?
Yes. We are putting out the soundtrack of an action movie called Black Dynamite http://www.blackdynamite.com/. It had great reviews at the 2009 Sundance Film festival. Black Dynamite is an upcoming spoof of blaxploitation films of the 1970’s. The soundtrack is going to be all 70’s funk and soul music.

How is Wax Poetics doing internationally?  Can you update us on the Wax Poetics Japan?
We found this group of people that were very interested in doing Wax Poetics in Japan. They understood us, our vision, and what they should do there in Japan. It was a natural development of things. Now, we are talking with people in China and France but nothing has been decided yet.

Andre, thanks a lot for sharing your time with us and congratulations

REVIEWS

Lyman Woodard – Saturday Night SpeciaL

A master of the Hammond organ, Lyman Woodard and his band sound fresh, smooth and smells like a rainy late night in spring.  Jazz, funk and r&b sounds are served up to taste slowly and with pleasure. This reissued album from Detroit (1975) is a hidden piece of art that has been rediscovered and reissued by Wax Poetics. The cover alone will take you back to the underground 70s and the
music content will take you away.

Vinyl edition SOLD OUT. Listen and buy the album mp3’s here :
