GondwanaSound :: 04.03.2011

Welcome to this week’s round the world music adventure taking Music Freedom Day as our starting point. Musicians and song writers are often at the forefront of protest movements and the struggle for social justice but under many regimes around the world they are not given the same freedoms we come to expect in Europe. We play tracks from two brave Cameroonian Musicians, Joe Le Conscience and Lapiro de Mbanga, both imprisoned for challenging the "status quo". We also rebroadcast our podcast featuring tracks from the Rough Guide to the Music of Afghanistan. A country with a rich musical culture, yet under recent regimes has seen a total ban and violent destruction of instruments.

But before all this we start with some topical new releases from A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Orchestre Poly Rythmo and a track from Annie Florie de Batchiellilys who plays London’s Royal Festival Hall.

No album of the week this week as we celebrate Music Freedom Day.
