It was during a ten-month trip to the USA, that Fela Kuti discovered, not only James Brown and Afro-American music, but also the "civil rights movement" which message he felt obliged to pass on through his music in hope for a better future. It was in the city of Los Angeles that Fela Kuti said: “I want to be Malcolm X” and “So, now, I’m going to write African music”. Once back home in Lagos, Nigeria, Fela Kuti really fulfilled his musical vision and shaped what we know today as Afrobeat.
Nowadays afrobeat is mixed with hip-hop, hard-core funk, rock and many other styles that the band Hearts Of Darkness (HOD) brilliantly inject into their own musical cocktail. Based in Kansas City, the city that gave birth to Charlie Parker, became a jump off for Count Basie and greatly influenced jazz music in America, HOD just released an eponymous album, entirely recorded on analog tape, making it sound as good as a vintage album. HOD is an afrobeat big band, fronted by MC Les Izmore, who demonstrates here his vocal technique on original tracks and a powerful sound. Hearts of Darkness deliver here a very refreshing album proving once again that novelty often requires a journey back to the roots.
And by the way, don’t miss their explosive live shows!
